If you have seen Sono Bello adverts or searched for laser fat removal in the United States, you have probably wondered what Sono Bello actually is, whether it is the same as liposuction, and why it is so hard to find a price. This guide answers those questions from Sono Bello's own published information and independent medical sources, then explains how it compares with liposuction performed by surgeons in Istanbul.

What is Sono Bello?

Sono Bello (sometimes written Sonobello) is a chain of cosmetic surgery centres in the United States. The company describes itself as a provider of liposuction, body contouring and excess skin removal, and says it has more than 100 locations across the country. It operates only in the US.

Its procedures are marketed under brand names, but they are versions of established operations:

• TriSculpt: Sono Bello's name for its micro-laser liposuction, the core procedure.
• AbEX: liposuction combined with removal of loose skin around the abdomen, which Sono Bello presents as an alternative to a tummy tuck.
• LiftEX: a 360-degree treatment for loose skin around the body.
• WaistEX, ArmEX and ChestEX: treatments for the midsection and back, the upper arms, and the male chest.
• Non-surgical add-ons: skin tightening and lymphatic drainage massage.

So when people ask what Sono Bello is, the short answer is that it is a brand, not a new technique. The procedure underneath is laser-assisted liposuction.

How does Sono Bello work?

According to Sono Bello, the surgeon numbs the treatment area with local anaesthesia rather than general anaesthesia, and you stay awake throughout. Medication to help you relax may be offered. The surgeon then removes fat through small incisions using a laser-assisted liposuction technique, which Sono Bello says also delivers heat to the deeper layers of the skin.

Sono Bello states that a liposuction session takes about two and a half to three hours, or a little longer when excess skin is also removed. You go home the same day with another adult driving you, and you wear a compression garment for several weeks afterwards.

What laser-assisted liposuction is

In laser-assisted liposuction, a thin laser fibre is passed under the skin to heat and soften the fat before it is suctioned out. The heat also seals small blood vessels, which may reduce bleeding and bruising. Manufacturers and some clinics also say it tightens the skin.

The independent evidence is more cautious. Studies comparing laser-assisted and traditional liposuction are mostly small, and some are linked to device makers. Any skin-tightening effect appears to be modest and varies from person to person. Laser energy also brings a risk that traditional liposuction does not: burns to the skin from the inside. In practice, the surgeon's skill and your skin quality matter more than the device.

Is Sono Bello liposuction?

Yes. Whatever the brand name, Sono Bello's core procedure is liposuction: fat is broken up and suctioned out through a cannula inserted under the skin. That matters for two reasons.

First, it is surgery. Being awake under local anaesthesia makes it feel lighter, but it is still an invasive procedure with surgical risks, a recovery period and a permanent change to the treated area.

Second, the usual rules of liposuction apply. The NHS and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons both stress that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and does not replace diet and exercise. It works best for people close to a healthy weight who have stubborn pockets of fat and firm, elastic skin. It does not remove cellulite or stretch marks, and skin that has lost elasticity after weight loss or pregnancy may need a skin removal operation instead.

How much does Sono Bello cost?

Sono Bello does not publish prices. On its own pricing page it says there is no standard price list and no online estimate: the cost is set after a personalised consultation, which is free, and you receive a written quote.

The factors it lists are:

• The technology used
• How long the surgeon needs to treat the areas

Is Sono Bello safe? The risks of any liposuction

People often search for Sono Bello reviews, complaints and "nightmare" stories before deciding. Individual experiences vary, and we cannot judge any provider's results from the outside. What we can say is that every liposuction procedure, at any clinic and in any country, carries real risks. The NHS lists, among others:

• Bruising and swelling, which can last for months
• Numbness in the treated area
• Lumpy, uneven or asymmetric results
• Fluid collecting under the skin, and fluid leaking from the incisions
• Scarring at the incision sites
• Infection and bleeding
• Rare but serious complications, such as blood clots in the lungs and damage to internal organs

Laser-assisted techniques add the risk of burns. Having several areas treated in one session, or combining liposuction with skin removal, makes the procedure longer and the recovery harder.

The most useful protection is the same everywhere: check that your surgeon is fully qualified and registered, ask how many of these procedures they perform, ask what happens if you need a revision, and make sure you understand the aftercare before you book.

Does Sono Bello really work?

Liposuction does permanently remove fat cells from the treated area, so in that sense it works. Sono Bello says early results appear in the first days and weeks, with the final result within about six months, once swelling has settled. That matches the NHS, which says results may not be visible until the swelling goes down.

Two things limit what any liposuction can do. Remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight, and fat can build up in untreated areas. And liposuction removes fat, not skin: if the skin is loose, removing the fat underneath can leave it looser. That is why procedures such as a tummy tuck, an arm lift or a thigh lift exist alongside liposuction.

Sono Bello vs CoolSculpting

Sono Bello is often compared with CoolSculpting, another brand that appears in the same searches. They are very different:
